peopleofprint:

Yesterday was lots of fun. We were printing at London Screen Service in Bermondse for Mootown Cheese. A massive thank you to Amber James for doing an excellent job.

BAM Discussing Craft and Digital Design

1. The digitalisation of design is giving designers more and more freedom to easily accomplish most things rendering jobs such as the Type-setting redundant. Do you think this will continue and print will become just another element of digital design?

More and more of our everyday activities are becoming screen based - reading a newspaper, mail interactions, even having personal conversations through an impersonal web cam. Its becoming the format we feel comfortable and familiar with. But within the desire to progress towards a better future, we still maintain a nostalgic attachment to traditional aesthetics and practices. There will always be the torchbearers that uphold the craft of print, but the quantity of them may continue to decline. They will never be extinct though.

2. Though it is inevitable that print would start to be digitalised as it evolves along with other craft, do you think that it may loose some of its worth or authenticity?

You can always tell if an image has been digitally processed to look like it has been traditionally printed. What is attractive about it is the authenticity, the texture of the paper and the visible interaction of the maker with the ink marks and even the mistakes. Also people that understand print can truly appreciate its integral value because it is by nature a complete contrast to digitally produced print.

3. Has the relationship between craft and computer software strengthened both and increased creativity or not?

Programs like photoshop and illustrator make it a lot easier to experiment with ideas and create work that wouldn’t be possible by hand. A combination of the two is ideal, but I find working solely on the computer stifles my creativity as my work is rooted in and inspired by hand made processes. Computer software enables you to get to your final idea faster but can only act as an intermediary device in the whole process.

4. David Refurt said “as soon as you show some competency you get put into a position of managing people. Taking a step aside from design” do you think this is true and that it is as important to produce beautiful work as it is to have a certain recognisable style?

I think its more important to have a reputation for being good at what you do and that in itself shows competency. Having a recogniseable style just means that people are able to recollect your identity from your work but they won’t bother to remember you if there is no meaning or substance to your design.

5. As people become more and more aware of social concerns it becomes apparent in design, the expressions of which are increasingly emotive and intimate to keep the public interested. Does this ironically have the opposite affect?

Desensitisation to shocking imagery or topics is an ongoing process as its howwe, as humans, cope with disturbing information. Its when someone stops being affected by the terrible things that happen in the world that becomes a serious problem. You can ignore an image or newspaper article if you choose to but the problem doesn’t go away, its the people that instigate the action that we need to encourage and these are the people that are inspired by emotive design.
